Relaxation: The Forgotten Art

Relaxation: The Forgotten Art

By Premdevi

In this fast paced society of ours, relaxation seems to be quite a luxury. One hundred years ago people did not have to do something special to relax. They could sit out on their porch and watch the sunset, have a cup of coffee with a neighbor or listen to the birds in the early morning. Life was slower – there were no telephones, cell phones, internet, cars or planes. In many ways life was less comfortable, there were not as many conveniences, however relaxation had its place. Minds were not as speedy, bodies not as tense.
Nowadays, we need to learn how to relax. Relaxation begins with the body – a good massage can help, as well as soft hypnosis techniques. It is helpful to learn to relax the breath, as our breathing is often shallow and restricted. Finally we can learn to relax our thinking at least for a few moments in the day. It sounds easy but considering all the accumulated stress we carry around, it does take practice.
Once we remember how to relax, we slow down and begin to feel things in a different way. Our sensitivity can awaken and an appreciation of the small things of every day life can grow. We can thus begin to have a relaxed presence in the moment to moment experience of daily living.
